Update on the Private Members Bill on Homosexuality in the Ugandan Parliament 6 May 2012

A private members bill on homosexuality introduced in the Ugandan Parliament has caused controversy. The President of Uganda discussed this issue with Ambassadors from European Union countries on 28 March 2012 and these are the main points he made:

“Unfortunately there is considerable misinformation on the debate of this Bill that has been published in the international media. It has further been widely reported that the Bill provides for the death sentence for this found guilty of homosexual activity. This is simply false.” He made clear that homosexuals would not be discriminated against or persecuted. The Bill is not supported by the government but, under the terms of the constitution, the government is obliged to allow debate of such propositions.

The complete comments made can be read in the text released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
