The Bwindi Batwa Development Program celebrated the grand opening of the Batwa Women’s Center and the launch of the Batwa Experience recently!

Representatives from Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge and of the VSPT attended the celebration with Batwa from the Mount Gahinga area in support of their brothers and sisters. The Kellerman Foundation as well as local community leaders and Bwindi Park UWA wardens were also present during the day-long celebration, which was hosted by over 50 members of the Bwindi area Batwa community.

The Batwa Women’s Center, located near the Buhoma Bwindi NP head quarters is a complex designed for the training and development of Batwa women in crafts and other trades in order to enhance their livelihoods. The Center includes sewing equipment with several singer sewing machines and other tailoring equipment, as well as a crafts training and work area.

The “Batwa Experience” allows visitors to go travel with the Batwa into the forest and learn about their traditional culture and forest life.

The VSPT has supported the Batwa in both the Bwindi and Mount Gahinga areas close to the VS lodges and has had the pleasure of being a part of the growth of this small and disparate community over the last few years. We hope that the opening of this Women's Center signals a growth in the community that will see an improvement in their livelihoods long-term.
