Packing List

Ugandans and Rwandans appreciate those who dress modestly. Cotton clothing is the most comfortable during the day. Uganda and Rwanda are warm in the plains but often cold in the hills and mountains; a rain jacket, heavy sweater and boots are therefore essential. It is best to have layers of clothing, as temperatures tend to change. The following is only meant as a guideline as you may have your own preferences: Volcanoes Lodges do have a laundry service, but drying times can be slow! The items below marked with * are available from the Volcanoes Safaris Store.

  • 2-3 pairs of light weight slacks/trousers - that can dry quickly (if worn tracking) *
  • 1 pair of shorts *
  • 1-2 long sleeved shirts *
  • 3 short sleeved t-shirts *
  • A breathable waterproof and windproof jacket like a Gortex *
  • 1 sweater, sweatshirt or fleece *
  • 1 skirt (for women)
  • Swimsuit
  • Strong waterproof walking boots - pants should be tucked into socks and boots while Trekking (heavy soled rain boots also work well) *
  • Pair of sports sandals like Tevas *

Pack for a Purpose

Pack for a Purpose is an organisation designed to help you benefit the local communities more when you come and visit their home countries. It works by taking advantage of the difference in baggage allowances on the airplane and on safari. Because you are allowed to take more on the plane than you are on safari, they give a directory of local projects near your destination (in our case projects that are also supported by the VSPT) and a list of suggested items to take with you. When you reach the lodge, you can drop off the supplies you've brought with you and they will be delivered to their destinations. There's no added cost at all and it's all about giving something for nothing in return. For more information, visit their website.
