October 23^rd - Artists in Uganda used motorbikes, commonly known as boda bodas, to display street art installations as part of the 2014 Kampala Contemporary Art Festival.

Motorbikes (boda boda) were the main focus of this project. They are a popular means of transport used not only Uganda, but also other parts of Africa. They are one of the quickest ways to get through the traffic, and can be both exciting and dangerous at the same time. The artists installed their art pieces on a number of boda bodas that paraded through the city, with others stationed at different locations all over the city.

20 artists took part in this festival and exhibited different art pieces on the bikes which included: the disco bike, a large helmet made out of plastic bottles highlighting the necessity of being safe while riding on a boda, the musical bike that had a musician playing the drums while they rode through the city, representing all the artists that work hard and are unappreciated in the country, the fruit bike and the mirrors bike that showcased the boda boda riders as helpers of the community. The bikes drew in massive crowds at every stop, with people eager to look at the art and listen to the music being played at the loudest booth.

The aim of this festival was to get Ugandans to appreciate art and local artisits and gain a better understanding of the potential talent in their own country. Of course the show was also meant to inspire fun and pride, for the people of Kampala, and to celebrate Uganda’s unique and vibrant culture.
