Support for the Rangers Protecting Gorillas in Virunga National Park, DRC

Supporting the Appeal from the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) for the support of Rangers Displaced by War.

The security situation in the Virunga National Park in Eastern DRC, part of the Virunga Tri-national Conservation Area remains volatile. This continues to constitute a threat, not only to the communities living in the immediate periphery of the National Park, but also to sustainable conservation in the area.

The rangers protect the mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park working under very difficult circumstances; they lack adequate shelter, clean water, food and sanitation.  Approximately 371 rangers and their families have been forced to take refuge in a displaced peoples camp to the north of Goma established by ICCN.

The ICCN and their partners, supported by the Greater Virunga Transboundary Core Secretariat, are appealing for support for these rangers and their families.

Volcanoes encourages clients who wish to, to donate to the appeal on Gorilla.cd, the official website for the Virunga National Park.

Some examples of how your donation could help are:

Educational Kits for children (420 children) - approx $10 per child

Non-food item kits for displaced ranger families - approx $30 per day per family

Patrolling Equipment4 (rucksack, tent etc) – approx $66 per ranger

Patrol rations – approx $150 per ranger per month

3 months’ maintenance of Ranger Refugee Camp  - approx $1000 per day

Fuel – approx $1,200 per vehicle for 3 months
