Our Bwindi Lodge has been supporting the project by ensuring we buy as much of our fresh vegetables as possible from AMAGARA, and we include a visit to some of their demonstration sessions and cookery lessons in our safari itineraries. Our guests at Bwindi Lodge can also buy AMAGARA honey & tea from the lodge shop as a reminder of their time in Bwindi.
In order to make it easier for growers who live further away to get their vegetables to market, we have, through the Volcanoes Trust just donated a specially designed motorbike with a trailer. This enables AMAGARA staff to collect vegetables from growers in neighbouring villages and take the produce for sale around the various hotels and lodges in the area.
AMAGARA has seen its members receive a much-needed boost to their household income as well as increased family nutrition. This link between increased household income and tourism has also given the farmers a powerful incentive to conserve the forest and the gorillas who live there.
Volcanoes Safaris donates US$100 from the profits of every safari to the Volcanoes Trust, which helps us to support worthwhile local projects like AMAGARA. In this way each of our guests is also contributing to the lives of local people in the areas we visit - thank you!
