Searching for Lions with the Kyambura Lion Monitoring Team
04 March 2024
Dr Alex Braczkowski, together with the Kyambura Lion Monitoring Team, recently conducted a live search for lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Their search was streamed in real-time to over 50 school classrooms worldwide, thanks to the efforts of Exploring by the Seat of your Pants, an organization dedicated to bringing frontline researchers to school classrooms and inspiring the next generation of scientists.
The team was thrilled to be able to engage with students from all over the world. To watch the video please click here.
Background
The Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT) is working in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to collect data for African lion, leopard and spotted hyena over a 3 month period in Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area using a network of vehicles, and remote camera traps. This project aims to establish a science-based conservation program which supports the protection of Uganda’s carnivore populations and improves the livelihoods of local people living in and around the wildlife parks.
Read more here about the science which underpins these surveys and watch Tree Climbing Lions on Disney+ which shows the lion counting methods in action.
Please watch and share our new short films featuring Alex and Bosco and Francis and read more about the project here.
