Update on Gahinga Batwa Village
26 June 2026
Strengthening Community, Culture and Opportunity
It is a pleasure to share the progress for the Mgahinga Batwa Village, creating meaningful impact for families living around Mgahinga.
Since 2018, with the creation of the Batwa Village through the support of Volcanoes Safari Partnership Trust (VSPT), past guests and generous donors, in particular Fight For The Forgotten and Kellerman Foundation, significant milestones have been reached.
Together, we have increased the land purchased for the Batwa from 6 acres to 21 acres, to provide a long term stable home for the Batwa and to ensure there is a future opportunity for the community to grow. The number of homes have increased to 42 units to create a safe place for the 150 community members together with improved sanitation facilities.
The community centre has been equipped to provide a dedicated place for children to study, for visiting health workers and counsellors and for community meetings.
Expanding Vocational Training Opportunities
Plans are now being finalised to build a new vocational training centre to provide valuable skills training in carpentry, tailoring, hair dressing - an essential pathway toward employment and greater self-sufficiency.
With the support of the Rwenzori Foundation, the Batwa are getting training to improve their centuries old pottery-making skills to make high quality sculpture.
Many thanks to the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) for providing support for a traditional medicinal garden.
