Andrew Kato was born and raised in Katerera Village, nearby Kyambura Gorge Lodge in Western Uganda. He joined Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust as a trainee in the Kyambura Youth Training Program in 2021. During the program, he learnt his extensive knowledge of birds and wildlife. Following the program, he was offered a full-time role as a Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust wildlife guide.

In late 2021, he participated in the annual chimpanzee survey under the supervision of Dr Nicole Simmons, a chimpanzee expert. The survey completed research to determin the health of each individual within the Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee community. He also participates in the Kyambura Lion Monitoring Project as part of the Kyambura Lion Monitoring Team.

Andrew is a keen photographer and enjoys capturing the wide range of species in the Kyambura Gorge and Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area in his free time.
